Counselling Placements at Help Counselling

February 2025 Update: We are currently at full capacity for in-person placements and have very limited online availability so applications are currently closed. We will be conducting another intake of trainees in the next couple of months, so please recheck this page around April if you still require a placement. Please note that we will be recruiting trainees for a predominantly online placement.

In-person counselling placement spaces are limited and we anticipate those increasing towards the beginning of summer 2025. If you are able to start with clients online first, that would be very helpful. In-person placements are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, and the available slots vary from month to month. Therefore, we cannot make any guarantees about timing as this is driven by the open-ended nature of our client work and qualification routes taken by our current placement students.

About Placements at Help Counselling

Help Counselling offers fully supervised volunteer placements for trainee counsellors and psychotherapists enrolled in approved training courses within the London area.

We prioritise applicants who can offer online counselling, particularly during evening hours due to high demand.

We also provide a limited number of in-person counselling placements, with availability expected to increase towards early summer. If you can begin working with clients online and transition to in-person counselling later, this flexibility would be greatly appreciated.

In-person placements are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with slots varying month-to-month. Please note that due to the open-ended nature of client work and individual training pathways, we cannot guarantee specific timelines for in-person placements.

Important: You must meet all eligibility criteria outlined on our website.

Who We Place at Help Counselling

We seek trainee counsellors who are:

  • Committed to pursuing a professional career in counselling.
  • Empathetic, professional, and eager to make a positive impact.

A detailed list of our eligibility criteria can be found here.

What We Offer You

At Help Counselling, we provide a supportive, structured, and caring environment for your development. This includes:

  • Fortnightly Group Supervision: Sessions last 90 minutes and are capped at 4 supervisees, ensuring thorough support for your client work.
  • Individual Supervision & Mentoring: We offer individual supervision if required, as well as ongoing mentoring from a dedicated placement manager.
  • Carefully Matched Clients: We ensure you are only assigned clients that align with your readiness and skills. We do not take on cases that could put you or the client at risk.

Most of our clients experience anxiety or depression, though some may present with substance abuse issues or personality disorders.

Caseload: You will work with an average of three clients at any given time.

Our Approach

We foster an integrative approach to therapy, allowing flexibility to address the unique needs of each client. You’ll explore methods collaboratively with your supervisor to determine what works best for individual clients.

We focus on the personal and social factors contributing to human distress, ensuring our care is holistic and tailored.

Our Therapy

Help Counselling offers both online and face-to-face therapy, and you may choose to work in either format or a combination of both.

What Makes Us Different

We offer the opportunity to work with some clients on a long-term basis. This allows you to develop therapeutic relationships and address deeper, more complex issues—something not always possible in short-term placements.
